Pi Network introduces email authentication and resumes migration to Mainnet

Pi Network has historically used phone numbers as the primary identifiers for user accounts. However, this approach has proven problematic due to the unreliability and cost of SMS authentication, particularly in light of geographic restrictions, telecommunications regulations, and various carrier policies.

In response to these challenges, Pi Network decided to move to two-factor authentication (2FA) based on email, with the aim of supporting advanced authentication methods such as access keys and biometrics in the future. This transition enhances the security of user accounts with a two-factor element and addresses the problems associated with previous SMS authentication.

In order to implement email 2FA, it is essential that each user has a trusted email address registered with the system. However, some users have not yet added an email, entered an incorrect email, lost access to an email, or shared an email with other family members. Pi Network is therefore performing additional analysis and verification to ensure the integrity of this process and the security of user accounts.

This transition required a temporary suspension of the migration to Mainnet until the necessary system checks were made. The good news is that the migrations have now resumed and will be gradually expanded once the 2FA email and associated system checks have been completed.

Pi Network is committed to ensuring a smooth and secure transition to the new authentication methods and appreciates the patience of users during this process. Users are encouraged to update their accounts with trusted email addresses and complete the 2FA process as soon as possible to ensure the security of their accounts and a smooth migration to Mainnet.
